It's not that Teradata uses RowHash "rather than" the column values. It's "in addition to".

Using RowHash for distribution assures that rows that might have matching values are co-located.

And if rows are in RowHash sequence then a RowHash comparison potentially allows Teradata to "skip over" groups of rows that couldn't possibly match.
