Is there a way to find out by a query the min / max partition boundaries (ranges).

I want to automatically extend a new partition and drop the old one by a monthly bteq process.

Has any one accomplished this already? Also I would like to understand why, when altering the table to drop/add partitions it requires to use constants instead of simple date arithmetic for the partitions being added/dropped.
