I appreciate everyone's input on this - and the easiest thing I can do is the simple "bt; locking tbl xxx for write;", wait a while and then "et;"

I was under the impression that you cannot just hold a lock on a table because the statement releases after execution - but wasn't thinking about the explicitly stated transaction itself. Silly me - overthinking a simple problem again.
