Hi All,

Just to close this email thread off. Despite valiant efforts by Victor Sovokin (thanks for all the help Victor) it didn't feel like we were getting anywhere so we wiped the disk clean and reinstalled Windows, service packs, Teradata and all applications.

It all worked until we re-installed the anti-virus software (FSecure Internet Security 2006). The first reboot after that resulted in an error being reported in program "pdeinetd.exe", and the database window gave us our old error message again. So we removed the anti-virus software, rebooted and all is working again. We're looking for a new anti-virus software package...

Once again, many thans for all those people who contributed ideas.
