Question: is the second archive run under a different TDP than the first? If so, I suspect that escon throughput is the limiting factor, and by running the second archive under a different TDP you are making more escon capacity available to your archives.

I would recommend asking your local NCR support/global support to review your TDP/ESCON configuration. It may be that you could boost your throughput by configuring additional ESCON channels/directors to the current TDP under which you job currently runs. You may have to ask your ESCON support team for configuration diagrams.
