Subj:   Re: Compare teradata with other databases

From:   Victor Sokovin

First of all, my comments on your posting are not meant as nitpicking. I just don't see any logic in your reply. Perhaps it is only me, so giving my arguments I hope to encourage somebody to clarify the situation.

As Dieter said its very hard to compare one RDBMS with other without knowing the business Model and the type of your application .

No, Dieter did not say that. What he said was:

"Any independant comparison will be hard to find, because almost everything regarding Netezza is covered by a NDA. You can't even download the manuals from their website :-(

It's based on PostgreSQL, which is a real good DBMS. The basic concepts are IMHO similar to Teradata V1 20 years ago when AMPs were not virtual but real processors..."

Netezza is targeting and showing performance in CDR (Call detail Records) ..

Did CDR analysis attract one of the largest book stores on Earth?

Just don't go with COST basis only ..I know its cheap but you have so many disadvantages bcos Netezza leverages established capabilities instead of building them ...

What does that mean?

We did a deep analysis on this product a year back and decided it will not suit our Application needs (ours is SQL intensive). Here is the analysis I did in June 2004

I think what you posted below is just a set of loosely connected statements, not analysis.

I don't think this would be a good product to review at this time because the product is still unproven in the market and of personal concerns about the underlying architecture (PostgresSQL).

Netezza could not be *proven* in the market because it is a new player there.

It may be > worth keeping an eye on this product and taking a closer look at it again in 2-3 years. Here is a summary of the key points.

They have very few customers (currently 12). Listed customers in marketing material are AT&T, Orange UK, TJX, and Epsilon.

It depends how you look at it. Try to attract more than 12 if you've just been on the (highly saturated) market for a year or two.

They went to production on 4Q 2003.

That's what I mean (but have no idea about the exact date).

Netezza Performance Server(NPS) consists of DBMS software and hardware.

So?

  A few key technical points:

  Operating System used is LINUX.

So?

NPS leverages established capabilities instead of building them to bring its product to market very quickly.

What does that mean?

NPS uses PostgresSQL, however Postgres has not been known for its query processing capabilities.

Dieter said it was "a real good DBMS".

Once again, this is not meant as nitpicking. I just wanted to emphasize that vendor comparison is a difficult task. It requires resources, time and scientific precision.

A student once posted a question on this Forum asking what topic he/she could choose for his/her thesis. I remember I suggested TD vs. Netezza comparison. Unfortunately, the student never reported back again. What a pity. We could use a thesis like this here.

Regards,

Victor

PS Netezza is only on my long-term to-do list; at the moment I have no idea what it is worth but I would like to find it out.
