Subj:   Re: Oracle to Teradata migration

From:   Victor Sokovin

I would like to know the challenges in Oracle to Teradata - Data warehouse migration. Appreciate if you can list out the changes required in terms of Design,Data types, SQL, Stored procedures etc. Let us assume we use Teradata ETL utilities or Informatica

You must be joking, right? These are two totally different systems with virtually endless list of changes, challenges and what not. Adding an ETL tool to the migration makes a big difference as well. Migration of Oracle stored procedures is an exercise of its own, for example. Don't expect them to map to what is called Teradata stored procedures. Same names but totally different products.

The good news is that this topic comes up often on this Forum. If you take a look at the archive, you should be able to find many useful discussions on various aspects of the migration. Some topics are quite advanced, though. To get started you could go first through the standard NCR documents. The DBA's Rosetta Stone comes to mind, for example. Not that I ever read the document myself but I think nobody can go wrong with a document with such a title. Just something you need in the beginning: rough translation.

Regards,

Victor
