Typically so that it can do a row-hash match scan. This requires that the two objects to be jined are in the same sorted order - and Teradata's 'order' is row hash.

Look at the step where the sort is happening and find the number of the OUTPUT spool file. Now find the next place where that spool file is used, it will typically be a row-hash match scan.
