Although the HINT feature has the benefit of easily modifying a given execution plan, the downside is that, in doing so, you may be masking a real optimizer problem. In addition, I don't believe that HINT supported plans are officially supported by Oracle so, with a each new release, it places the burden of regression testing on the user.
