Can we incorporate outer join into an Update Statement?

Here is the requirement :

Update Field1 of Table1
    from   Field1 of Table2 (If Record exists in
                             Table2 for the join condition)

    from   Field1 of Table3 (If Record doesn't
                             exists in Table2 for the join condition)

I currently have to issue 2 update statements to get the final result.
