Doesn't matter. Think about running Bteq on an IBM mainframe or a Windows PC, Teradata probably isn't running on those machines either.

The Hosts file maintains a link between the machine name on the Logon statement and the ip address of the machine where Teradata is running.

Your client and the Teradata system obviously need to be network connected.
