Mike,

I take (most of) it back. I suggest that you look at Mirjam's solution. It only does one pass of the data, it removes any number of spaces.

I still recommend having the WHERE clause in the Update, but apart from that I think it's a good solution. It even removes the need to write/amend any non-SQL code !
