Vivek, The garbage character # you see is the length of the VARCHAR data (35). From Fastexport Manual: Both the INDICATOR and RECORD mode specifications return data in a client internal format with variable-length records: * Variable-length columns are preceded by a two-byte control value indicating the length of the column data. Note: The FastExport utility does not support field mode. To export field mode data, use the appropriate format clauses in your SELECT statements to enable the Teradata RDBMS to convert response data to character format. This is the reason why when you specified the cast to fixed char, garbage characters didn't appear. Regards, Valliappan
