I'm calling stored procedure thru BTEQ on MVS , how can I capture the stored proc output in a BTEQ?

CALL EXAMPLE(output);--- output is char(1)

Output is a integer , if it is 'Y' . I need to QUIT , ELSE I want to continue and some processing. With ACTIVITYCOUNT I cannot get the real value of output

How can I do this on MVS thru BTEQ
