Subj:   Re: GIS Mapping Software

From:   Jim Downey

John,

For this subject, could you allow a little more flexibility in this requirement. In what I have seen, GIS software tends to maintain a proprietary database to store the polygons needed for mapping. I think all Teradata shops are going to have the same kind of need. Given that we have very large stores of geographic data, how can we leverage GIS technology without having to export to a desktop?

Many products are going to allow ODBC connectivity to the database as a source for mapping but this requires large exports.

It would be nice to find a product set that allows the GIS reference data to reside on Teradata so that the mapping can be presented via a thin client.

Thanks

Jim
