Hmmm...

I was wondering to myself why the difference in perf was so large. I too assumed to start with that the max subqueries were short. And the where clause appears fairly selective. Maybe it would be good to ask for the plans? Wonder if there is an index on quarterid or something?

Wish I had time to set it up and try it on R5. Would be interesting to see if partial group by would catch this case. Aggregate Customer where question and subgroup, then join to the results of the subqueries. Could be pretty cool.
