Subj:   Re: Collect stats on PI

From:   David Wellman

Hi,

For all recent releases of Teradata, statistics are vital if the optimiser is going to get the correct join plan. If you don't have stats on the PI of a table then the optimiser will ignore any other stats that are collected on the table.

Stats help the optimiser with row count, data value skewing within a column etc. There are some access paths which typically will not be chosen unless there are stats on the relevant column/index (e.g. value-ordered nusi).

I think you'll find that the general consensus is that stats are no longer optional, they are a requirement.

Cheers,

Dave
