We are using the type 3 JDBC driver + gateway currently. The gateway is running on our NT Server (along with IIS, MSI etc...).
If you can use the Type 2 driver, you don't need a gateway, and when the official Type 4 driver is released (soon!) that also does not need a gateway.
It's really up to you whether you have the gateway on a seperate server or one of the Teradata nodes, I would probably go for running the gateway wherever you run your web server (if you have one). I would also stick with one gateway, not one per application.
BTW: I'm not a JDBC guru either ;)
Hope this helps,
