Subj:   Details on Teradata

From:   Chris Farrell

Hey guys,

I'm new to the list, I read all the emails they sent and hope I'm not violating any of the TOS. I'm on several other mailing lists and I made my best efforts to not break the rules, as I didn't see this forbidden anywhere here goes.

I am a student studying Data Warehousing independently with a professor who wishes to teach a class on the subject. Basically I'm the grunt doing the legwork but I'm loving it.

Right now we are interested in the differences between oracle and teradata. Namely, I am interested in knowing the technical differences between the two. I've read the press release stuff and now I want the real details. All topics are welcome if you deem them relevant, however my primary topics of interest are

-parallel processing: I've read about the teradata approach and the oracle approach and in my eyes they seem similar or at the least related.

-query optimization: Heard about the need to tune oracle queries and how the teradata optimizer is more mature. Why is it that oracle hasn't improved their query optimizer? I'd guess that it isn't that hard to do cost estimation for anyone who has a good understanding of relational algebra. There has to be more to it then that.

-ETL tools and other neccessary tools external to the DBMS

-cost(can't seem to find pricing for teradata's stuff)

-DBMS internal technical differences. does one use a different type of indexing or what explains the performance advantage of Oracle with OLTP and Teradata with Data Warehousing?

I have a pretty firm grasp on relational database concepts and other various things, however as a student I just haven't had the resources (servers + software) or time to gain hands on experience and I'm sure there is quite a bit I don't know.

Thanks

Chris Farrell
