Agreed, although the magnitude of the slowdown is usually not significant. But the trade-off (as I believe someone else has mentioned) is speed and ease of development.

A tip: Watch out for people who use regular expression matching for simple cases rather than length() or substring(). I've cut run times in half by making this minor tweak. Regex matching is incredibly powerful and can be simple, but it's often overkill.

P.S.O.T. A friend noted to me, in regards to a remark I made about Apache, that while Apache 1 was never production-ready for Win2K, the situation is different for Apache 2.
