On this point, from my limited experience, there is a difference -- application DBAs do this up front, while production DBAs fix this after things choke. If your job covers both (mine does), try to emulate the application DBA.


  taking backups  


Due to how our site is organized, I never ever get to touch backups -- after five years with Teradata, this remains my area of near- ignorance. Is this common?
