Subj:   Re: Session Mode (ANSI v Teradata)

From:   Jim Downey

We were on ANSI mode for a long time and finally converted to Teradata mode.

The biggest difference I remember was that Delete All in Teradata mode is instantaneous because of the way it simply marks the space as free, however in ANSI mode it took much longer (I can't remember if it journaled)

We had lots of little problems and anomalous things that sometimes boiled down to a gut feel that it was because we were in ANSI mode. I don't remember any specific case.

We also ran into the fact that everyone we talked to was in Teradata mode. I remember a presentation by Gartner where the speaker said that when looking at a product, even if they claim it will run on multiple platforms, you should find out what platform the company themselves run on. Just by sheer numbers, one platform works better with a product than others. Perhaps since more people run in Teradata mode, problems are found and fixed faster in Teradata mode than in ANSI mode.

Jim
