Karen,

All our archive software that handles direct attached tape drives (ASF2/NetBackup/NetVault) is able to handle multitape archives. Once a tape is completely full the tape will be unloaded and moved to its home position by the library. The media manager part of the software will then go into a media allocation routine to find a tape that is available for the rest of the archive. This process will repeat until the archive is completed.
