If you chose the dbc.columns route, be sure to add the 14 bytes of row overhead as grommel does so properly in his perl.

This covers the row length (2 bytes), row hash (4 bytes), uniqueness value (4 bytes), additional overhead (2 bytes), and the row reference array (2 bytes)
