Subj:   Re: Secondary Indexes on an Active Data Warehouse

From:   David Wellman

Matthew,

Check your index columns to see how non-unique they are. The more non-unique they are the worse the data loading run-times will be. In addition, if the index is too non-unique then it is unlikely that the index will be used much by the optimiser anyway -- which begs the question do you actually need the indexes?

Also don't forget that to really use the indexes once you've dropped/created them or done a bulk-load into the table you will typically need to re-collect statistics on them.

Cheers,

Dave
