  However, I constantly find myself using things like the color coding that inTERAgate produces to assist me in reading through such SQL in order to find out exactly why it's eating the machine.  



I don't use this a lot, but I have a freeware text editor called ConTEXT for which you can define your own text highlighting with colors, bold, italic, and so on.

The editor is at www.fixedsys.com...

and I have a highlighting file defined for Teradata SQL (V2R4.1) which I will be glad to send upon request.
