Your intuition is correct. This is a prime example of marketing spin and apparent desperation on the part of the vendor. The comparisons are not equivalent.

The Teradata figures include all the necessary space and resources that one would actually need to run queries in a real environment. Factors such as data protection (RAID or fallback), secondary indexes, and of course spool/work space should normally be considered. It seems that the Sybase figures do not account for such.

Also, there is obviously heavy use of compression on the part of Sybase. How else could one squeeze 48 TB of data into 22 TB of space? If you did the same with Teradata I would expect similar measurements.
