Subj:   Re: Metadata Repository

From:   Durham James

With respects to metadata, on the surface sounds wonderful. However just to implement a metadata repository, well might need to be refined.

If the requirements of the Metadata is to inform the user community of information about your data warehouse (i.e. subject areas, business entities, databases, columns, descriptions, business rules, valid values and the such, then I would check out Meta Data Services. This is a $0 cost product and comes with Teradata V2R4 and above. It takes very little time to set up and works relatively seamless for getting information out to the user community.

If however you are wanting to implement an Enterprise Wide repository for user, developers and everyone to auto generate information bi- directionally then you might want to look at CAs product. However I will caution you to take a strong look at who is the intended target to this Metadata. I have know several people to produce darn good metadata from Microsoft Access and it did everything that they wanted it to do.

I hope this helped.
