Subj:   Re: Teradata And EMC SAN space

From:   Andy Blevins

Teradata brings two major advantages to the needs of a data warehouse that others can't provide. Performance and self management. In order to achieve these objectives, Teradata takes complete control of the DASD and does not operate in a SAN environment. SAN makes a compelling argument for systems to share a DASD pool. However, in order to achieve the highest performance, a MPP system can not have one of the data base instances waiting for DASD service in an shared environment. The business impact ROI that hundreds of companies extract from running their Teradata system full tilt all the time greatly outweighs the small savings achieved by sharing DASD in a SAN environment. You grow a Teradata system in increments of nodes (horsepower) and DASD as an integrated system.
