Subj:   Re: SQL Question for all you experts out there

From:   Claybourne L. Barrineau

Tony,

I cannot figure this one out! I'd definitely submit this query (as soon as possible) to Teradata. By the way, what version of Teradata are you on? Also, is AFCVPRO defined as a Char(5)?

The strange thing about your second query is that the Optimizer applies the condition of (AFVCPRO = '87620','87621','87622') twice (first it applies this condition to the source table - QCLMB001 - to get row_ids, then it applies it again to Spool 1 before it joins to A1). It should only do this once. Seemingly, applying the same condition twice would be inefficient.

My only guess is that when the Optimizer is applying the condition of AFVCPRO = '87620','87621','87622' for a second time (against Spool 1), it is failing to find any 'true' conditions. Perhaps Spool 1 has truncated or included some spaces in its AFCVPRO column?

I'd be interested in what you hear back from NCR.

Hope this helps,

Claybourne Barrineau
