Subj:   Re: Admin Comment - Job postings on the TDATA-L Forum

From:   Paul Johnson

I'd like to add my opinion on the job postings debate....

Although I only contribute occasionally, usually because the answer to the post is widely known, I value this list highly and read most of the posts very carefully. It is clear to me that there is an ever-changing pool of new-to-Teradata people who are invariably assisted by some very experienced Teradata jockeys. All of this takes place in a very well-mannered, constructive environment. We're all celebrating the wonders of the best kept secret in IT, after all!

The technical nature of the questions, and the quality of the responses, is what makes the list (in)valuable. I receive a flood of emails each day so I take the digest version at the moment. This takes quite a while to plough through, largely due to untrimmed replies (I'm guilty as well), and sometimes due to those infernal 'out of office' auto-responders. Can't we ban these for subscribers?

As a freelance gun-for-hire, I would like to be the receiver of well-targeted job offers. This is the irony of 'niche' skills - I have what many clients/agents are looking for (12 years hands-on experience, NCR certification etc), but it's a relatively small market in which we are often hard to find. UK agents, by and large, are clueless as to how Teradata fits into the grand scheme of things - I've seen many job ads that list Terradata or even Terrordata - I kid you not. Try typing terradata in jobserve.com and see what I mean. Letting this crowd post to the list would be a disaster, imho.

So, although I would welcome the contact from those who may potentially have something to offer, this list is certainly not the place. Let them post, even for a trial period, and you'll quickly rue the day.

BTW, I send several questions to the teradata.query email address a month or so ago but I've heard nothing. Anyone got any idea how to chase this up?
