Subj:   Re: Why did Data Warehouse Project Fail?

From:   William Homer

2 out of 3 IT projects (all types) "fail", meaning they do not reach completion or do not get used. A big trap to avoid in the data warehouse arena is the "build it and they will come" approach. This usually means no defined objectives, no or little business case, no time boxing and easy pickins for budget crunch time or, worse, expensive naval contemplation.

Another trap, IMO, is having the enterprise warehouse be your first project. Organizations need to see benefits from big payback "low hanging fruit" before making the leap to the "big bang". This results in rework some may view as wasteful, but it's really not...it's just the growing pains of learning to use this technology effectively.
