Subj:   HP and NCR was: Linux and Teradata

From:   Charles Farley

Hi all again-

It bugged me that I remembered hearing DHBrown associated with something a couple of years ago and I couldn't remember what, then I looked around last night, and TA-DA!!! DHBrown published a report on NT versus Linux in 1999, the report had some VERY interesting findings... It stated that NT outstripped Linux and that there were "no hard facts" to support much of the claims about Linux uptimes and other such *frivilous* Linux statements. Well, that was a shocker for about 20 minutes until I went over to Slashdot and found out that the "report" was funded in part by Microsoft. This may explain the curious absence of *BSD, Linuces, and SGI from the current 2001 Unix Function Review on DHBrown's site. It was also fact taht in the 2001 Function Review, Sun Solaris8 took two of the five categories, with the other categories being split between the other OSes. This actaully makes Solaris8 the overall winner. Not surprising, considering that HP-UC *still* default installs with no shadowed passwd file, and to make it a "trusted" system tends to break a lot of apps written fir the platform.

Allright, I'll get off the point, but I do want to say that situations such as the ones above with DHBrown, illustrate quite well why I have the disdain that I carry for "market analysts". If you are willing to sell your opinion to someone, you must also be willing to sell your credibility in the same deal.

I am after opinion from this forum for my own curiousity, I am not out to publish anything or cause harm, I want to know what is happening and what other people think of those changes. I think this group has a great membership and I see some really excellent feedback and topics here, and I thank all of you for your time and patience with me.

Thank you all,

loadc
