Well, yes, the BETWEEN will most probably do a FTS, but then, especially with dates, that's the purpose of the System Calendar. If you are indexed on the date, and you do a join to the System Calendar (a very virtual table, really only existent in memory), the System Calendar will return a range of dates, which COULD then be used to use the index in the table. HOWEVER, it's always important to have statistics and READ the explain to see what is actually happening!
