Mark,

As a recent adoptee of Teradata, I can also vouch for the more or less across the board benefits of using the COMPRESS option. We are on a V2R4 release and quickly realized that the current documentation relating to COMPRESS was very much out of date. To that end, I eagerly await the updated documentation. In the mean time however, I have a question I have been wondering about that you may be able to answer.

Based on my current understanding of how COMPRESS works, you cannot just apply the compression algorithm blindly across all values in a particular column. Typically we have to perform some sort of frequency analysis on the table column under consideration in order to find the most frequently occurring column value so that it can be specified in the COMPRESS statement at table definition. This has struck me as unnecessarily limiting. The question is why not just allow COMPRESS to be applied globally across all column values? If there is a way to achieve this currently I would definitely like to know how to do this as it would help me greatly with a particular application I support....

Thanks in advance.....Neil
