My opinion only.
I feel the manual is out of date regarding the 5 columns per table guideline. Compression can now be an option for better performance as well as safe disk space.
The newer compression routines and more importantly the higher CPU clock speeds allows compression on many columns per table.
Your better performance result is very typical of the norm when compression is now used.
