thanks for the further info . I have decided , at this time , not to add the extra SI's .

It is possible (although a bit messy) to get the desired results for a given week number and still use the existing SI's on the DATE columns by specifying the week number and a date range (of say 8 days) which is known to cover all (and a bit more) or the desired week . If this proves too complex a concept for our users (that is not supposed to sound derogatory - well not too derogatory) I may have to re think the approach or limit their expectation on query times and accept a full table scan .
