Subj:   Re: IDs datatypes for schema design

From:   John Dubery

Dave,

I have some follow up questions to your advice. I'm interested in how precise you have to be to avoid any overhead with varchars.

a) if join column datatypes are identical is it (essentially) the same cost for a join whatever that type is. I accept that comparing longer datatypes takes longer than shorter ones (linear increase?)?

b) Is there an overhead when joining varchar to char for the same (max.) length?

c) Is there an overhead when joining varchar to varchar for different max lengths?

Thanks,

John
