Subj:   Re: Oracle vs Teradata DBA maintenance

From:   Claudio De Luca

Tim,

I have, since last week, an experience to share with you and all DBA about performance Teradata v2R3/oracle8.

In our site we have now 3 teradata system, 5150 12 nodes, 5200 6 node, and smp 4400 for test purpose. We have just installed a new datamart in oracle (HP N 2 CPU 400MGz). The data come from our teradata DWH 5150. To compare power of both system, we have loaded data into the oracle and afterward teradata (4400 4 CPU 450MGz), as the data come from teradata the loading of teradata is incredibly faster (backup restore).

The allocate space is 150 GB for oracle and 145 GB for teradata. the tables loaded in both system has the same amount of data, layout and indexes. The first query was a select count of all the products of a customer with a sum of his products, result more than 2 hours for oracle and .... 7 minutes for teradata 4400 !!!!!

After some tune on oracle (loading the data sort by customer), the same query took only 3 minutes 20 seconds !!!! faster then teradata with less power. So It's interresting to have oracle for well know query and teradata for data warehouse or one shot query.

Claudio
