If you are offering something that is related to the Teradata product family, is free and without conditions, then I would like to see it offered to our group.

Within reason, I also don't object to Shareware - if it's related to Teradata. I do want to draw the line at commercial products or evaluation copies of commercially available products.

The issue of what is promotional and/or commercial is open to opinion and I really don't want to be too rigid. Maybe it would be best to say that if your posting contains legally protected material, trade secrets or you are unwilling to discuss how it works or provide snippets of code to demonstrate technique, then it probably isn't suitable for the TDATA-L list.

In regards to promotional material: I want to prohibit a vendor from simply sending information about their product to the list when a need hasn't been expressed by the list. However, if you have a product that is relevant to an existing thread, I don't mind somebody saying: "I've had that problem, have you looked at...." After all, the purpose of this list is for us to share our Teradata interests and experiences with others who have a similar interest.

Maybe the point can be made by the fact that I see a difference between a posting by NCR about the features that will be offered in V3 and that we shouldn't wait to upgrade versus a posting by NCR saying that they are planning a future release and they are looking for feedback from the members of this list or that a problem is going to be addressed by a future release.

I have mixed feelings about recruiting on this list and I would certainly welcome your suggestions. I belong to another list which has the policy that recruitment postings can be made, but location and salary range has to be included in the posting. This seems pretty reasonable to me and I'm thinking about making it a restriction that will be spelled-out in the Welcome Letter.

In closing: If you want to distribute something to the list, please don't send it as an attachment. The ListServ which hosts the TDATA-L list doesn't handle attachments very well. It's better if you offer your material to the list and ask those who are interested to e-mail you for a copy or see if you can find somebody who will put it on their webpage and then provide a URL in your posting.

That's actually a good point. Is anybody willing to let us use space on their webpage for the distribution of attachments? If so, please drop me a note.
